Musician Brandon Dyal

The pipe organ in the First  United Methodist Church at Bastrop was presented to the Church by Mr. W. A. McCord when the present church building was built in 1925.  Mr. McCord and his wife, Sallie E., and her parents, W. G. and A. E. Powell, were great benefactors to the church, both materially and spiritually. When Mr. McCord presented the organ, he did so in the name of his wife, who died in 1922.  Learn more about the organ here: https://fumcbastrop.org/ministeries/music/our-sanctuary-organ/

News Release: Teen Ambassadors of Hope

The teen in bold is our own Dani Rogers.  We are very proud of her here at FUMC Bastrop!

News Release:

Teen Ambassadors of Hope

Twenty three teens from across Texas have been selected for a statewide ambassadorship to promote healthy dating relationships and raise awareness about teen dating violence as part of Texas Advocacy Project’s 2nd annual Teen Ambassadors of Hope campaign.  Candidates were nominated by coaches, teacher, neighbors, and parents and were selected based upon their community involvement and social engagement.  Male and female teens ranging in age from 13-17, who live throughout Texas – including Austin, Houston, Mission, Plano, Round Rock- were selected to represent this year’s class.

Ambassadorship goals are threefold: engage young leaders in raising awareness about dating violence and healthy relationship; promote Texas Advocacy Project’s mission and legal services; and raise needed funds for the organization.  All participating teens will attend a mandatory training provided by The Project where they will cover healthy relationships, teen dating violence, personal branding, and grassroots fundraising.  In addition, these young contributors will participate in an exclusive Leadership Training class led by Dr. Barry Bales.  While spearheading their individual campaigns, the teens will compete for the title of Teen Ambassador of the Year presented to the top three ambassadors who raise the most funds in their respective campaigns.

“We are thrilled to engage with these young leaders and give them the tools to make a difference with their peers and community.  Dating violence is the most common form of violence among adolescents, so it’s really important that teens are opening up a dialogue to talk about what it means to be in a healthy relationship,” said Heather Bellino, Executive Director.

The 2016 Teen Ambassador cohort is comprised of: Zoe Arora, Jackson Castro, James Castro, Hannah Collmann, Shaunak Divine, Dalton Doerr, Madison Doerr, Averi Goecks, Elyse Guerra, Hunter Jones, Heather King, Samantha Martinez, Barrington Miles, Amy Opara, Blake Pettit, Meredith Reece, Brianna Rezler,Danielle Rogers, Cara Spradling, Annabella Stavrou, Joseph Studer, Avery Turner, and Lizi Xiong.

The campaign will run from May 1 – July 8.  All participants will receive credit for their volunteer work and will be recognized for their efforts at an awards banquet on July 23.

Eagle Scout Brandon Lai

Brandon Lai, a 16-year old boy scout with Troop 2010 in Bastrop, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts.

For his Eagle Project, Brandon directed a team of over 30 fellow scouts, adults, and friends across three days to beautify a local park in Bastrop – Ferry Park.  Under his direction the volunteer team reroofed and repainted the gazebo, touched up the mortar around the surrounding flowerbed, power sprayed the sidewalk, repainted parking lot lines, made repairs to the chain link fence, cleaned up brush from the adjoining stairway down to the riverwalk, and picked up trash.  His project totaled over 500 hrs from planning to fruition.

Brandon has provided service and leadership for his troop as Senior Patrol Leader and in many other positions.  He was the Capitol Area Council delegate speaker at the 2013 Report to State to then Gov. Rick Perry and was the Crew Leader for the Troop’s first High Adventure trek to Sea Base Bahamas in 2015.  He was formally presented the Eagle Scout award at a Court of Honor ceremony on Apr. 9.

Brandon is the son of Richard and Kathy Lai.

Health Ministry Team Reception

The Health Ministry Team welcomes all FUMC members to a reception in the The Youth Hut (across the alley from the Fellowship Hall) on Sunday, April 10th from 8:30-12. Come out and meet the team, enjoy refreshments before and after service and see what we are doing with underserved patients here in Bastrop County. We appreciate your support and invite you to engage the team with your ideas, gifts of time and talents.
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ Truly, I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” ~Matthew 25:34-40
